Dr. Wanda M. Burton


Dr. Burton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Environmental Sciences. She teaches an interdisciplinary research methods course to graduate students across multiple departments within the College of Human Environmental Sciences (CHES). Dr. Burton also teaches undergraduate students in the departments of Health Science and Human Development and Family Studies. Dr. Burton's research interests include health equity and she has investigated racial health disparities in low birthweight and mental health. Dr. Burton has also examined other social justice issues such as sexual assault and dating violence on college campuses. She has co-authored papers in the Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice,  American Journal of Health Education, and Sex Education: Sexuality, Society and Learning. In addition to her teaching and research, Dr. Burton has professional experience in the community addressing poverty, disability rights, and gender violence. 

Dr. Burton's research informs her service. As the chair of the CHES Committee on Diversity and Inclusivity, Dr. Burton works with the University of Alabama's Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and serves as a member of the Academic Diversity Council. She also serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the Faculty Senate. 

Dr. Burton is a native of Tuscaloosa, AL. She received her bachelor's degree in Psychology, a master's degree in Human Development and Family Studies and a PhD in Health Education Health Promotion, from the University of Alabama. She enjoys time with her family, listening to music and reading.
